BEAVERCREEK and YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio--Antioch Writers' Workshop and Books & Co are offering the next Free Writers' Workshop on November 10, 2:00-3:30 p.m. at Books & Co at The Greene. Columnist Mary McCarty will help writers tap into experiences that make great stories and that, shared through an essay or memoir, can help readers on their own personal journeys. McCarty will discuss the best ways to craft those experiences into essays or a full-length memoir as well as how to find publishers and readers.

This Weekend! Second Sunday FREE Writers' Seminar

Antioch Writers' Workshop and Books & Co are offering the next Free Writers' Workshop on October 20 2:00-3:30 p.m. at Books & Co at The Greene. The workshop, "Writing your life: Journaling." presented by Don Koch will help writers who journal or want to journal figure out how to use this writing technique for personal growth and/or to help deepen and improve creative writing efforts.

Dawn is a writing group facilitator who works independently and through the non-profit, Women Writing for (a) Change located in Cincinnati, where she also works as Program Manager. Dawn holds a BA with an interdisciplinary focus in writing process, women’s studies, children’s literature, and curriculum development from Goddard College, and an Individualized MA from Antioch University Midwest in Women’s Transformative Writing Process.

After you've mingled and enjoyed wine, beer, other beverages and hors d'ouevres, Martha will share the insights, imagination and inspiration that enabled her to transition from a career as a beloved physician to best-selling novelist. There will be plenty of time for asking questions of this creative literary master... and for meeting new friends!

The first LitSalon will take place at the home of Amy and Ron Rollins in Kettering, Ohio. Ron is the Associate Editor of the Dayton Daily News and is a contemporary visual artist who has had his work displayed in many local art shows. (Bonus: see some of Ron's art work and art collection!)


The cost of this wonderful evening is $35 per couple or $20 per individual. Limited to a total of 20 individuals. ALL fees go to support scholarships as well as the Young Writers and other programs of the Antioch Writers' Workshop. FIFTY PERCENT of cost is tax deductible; participants will receive a letter stating donation amount.

Application to attend the Antioch Writers' Workshop 2013 Fall Retreat, November 1-3, 2013, is now open. The Fall Retreat will be held at Grailville Retreat Center and led by authors Matthew Goodman and Sherri Wood Emmons. 
  
The Retreat is designed for writers who have works of fiction (short stories or novels) or essay(s)/creative nonfiction either complete or in progress and who wish to focus on revising/completing this work and identifying next steps on their writing paths. Up to twenty writers will be selected from applicants.  

Interested participants can apply by email to info@antiochwritersworkshop.com with the subject line: Fall 2013 Retreat Application. Attach, as a WORD file, or mail to Antioch Writers' Workshop, c/o Antioch University Midwest, 900 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs, OH 45387, the following TWO documents:
1) A one-page cover letter providing your name, contact information (address, email, phone), and a paragraph or two about where you are on the writing path (what you're working on) and why you want to attend this retreat.
2) A writing sample: between 10 and 20 double spaced pages of creative nonfiction OR fiction.

It has been a month since the 28th Annual Antioch Writers' Workshop. Participants, Faculty, Speakers and Staff have written about their experiences online, and we will be bringing their take to you throughour blog in a series of posts titled, "In Your Words: Reflections on 2013 AWW."

She is a graduate of Earlham College and the University of Denver Publishing Institute. A mother of three, she lives in Indiana with her husband, two fat beagles, and four spoiled cats. Fall Retreat Leader -- Matthew Goodman

The fantastic Matthew Goodman, author of three books of non-fiction will lead the Fall Retreat, November 1-3, 2013 at Grailville Retreat Center.

Goodman’s latest book, the narrative historyEighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World, was published in 2013 by Ballantine Books. It has been translated into seven languages and was chosen as a Barnes & Noble Spring 2013 Discover Great New Writers selection. His previous book, The Sun and the Moon: The Remarkable True Account of Hoaxers, Showmen, Dueling Journalists, and Lunar Man-Bats in Nineteenth-Century New York, was a Borders Books Original Voices selection and was named one of the Best Books of the Year by The Economist magazine. Antioch Writers' Workshop's A La Carte Options (all held at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs, Ohio), are designed for writers who are testing the writing waters, writers who are looking for a quick dose of inspiration, writers who don't have a full week available to attend the full conference, or writers who want to try a portion of the workshop before committing to attending for the full week in a future year.

A La Carte options include the Saturday SeminarMorning Only Classes, and the Afternoon "Focus on Form" Seminar.

2013 Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to the winners of this year's scholarships. 

Betty Crumrine Scholarship 
The first place winner of the  Betty Crumrine scholarship is Cathy Amboy. First place winners receive a full waiver of registration and tuition for the Full Week experience.

Bill Baker Scholarship 
The first place winner of the Bill Baker scholarship is Karen DePinto. First place winners receive  a full waiver of registration and tuition for the Full Week experience.
The second place winner is Charlotte Pack. Second place winners receive a half waiver of registration and tuition.

Judson Jerome Scholarship
The first place winner of the Judson Jerome scholarship is Kelly Thomas. First place winners receive  a full waiver of registration and tuition for the Full Week experience.

Teen Category 
The 1st place winner in the Teen Category was 17-year-old Maria Bete of Beavercreek for the story "The Way to Manhattan". First place winners receive a $125 scholarship toward Antioch Writers' Workshop 28th Annual Summer Program.
