In Your Words: Reflections on 2012 AWW

Today's post about the 2012 Antioch Writers' Workshop comes from one of the Young Writers program participants. In a heartfelt and inspiring post, Marissa details the excitement of being accepted and her reflections on the program:

I cried even harder when I got an email at midnight that said “Congratulations! You have been selected as a participant in the Antioch Writers’ Workshop Young Writers’ Program!” I also screamed, and danced, and accidentally woke up my mother.

I cried because I finally had the opportunity to fit in somewhere, even if my family couldn’t technically afford it. I had a choice: I could replace my dying iPod, get new clothes in the fall and winter, or go to Antioch.

I chose Antioch. (READ)

The post, "Please Remove Your Hats at the Door - A Reflection on the Antioch Writers' Workshop," chronicles Carrie's journey to the workshop and back.

Just weeks before the Workshop was to begin, I received this in my inbox: “It’s my honor and delight, on behalf of the Antioch Writers’ Workshop scholarship committee, to inform you that you have been selected as the Second Place Betty Crumrine Scholarship winner.”

No, Antioch, it was an honor and delight to have you believe in me. (READ)

In Your Words: Reflections on 2012 AWW

We're back with more from Antioch Writers' Workshop participants. Check out this post, "Summer writing musings" on Katherine M. Hart's blog. Katherine writes about her experience at this year's summer workshop and working with faculty member, Crystal Wilkinson. Here's a taste:

I spent a week at the Antioch Writers’ Workshop, which I consider another “home.” It was six years ago when I first attended that workshop as a shy, young-ish writer... Yet, coming back to Antioch, I felt empowered and recharged. I felt like a real writer. Surrounded by fellow writers, I drew strength from the creative energy buzzing through the campus.(cont.)

Saturday Seminar participant Marisa Becker reflects on her experience and some advice she took home with her on her blog,

I’ve fulfilled a teenage dream: I’ve attended the annual Antioch Writers’ Workshop – well, at least one day of it, but it was still a special occasion in my book." (more...)

In Your Words: Reflections on 2012 AWW

In this next installment of "In Your Words," we direct you to Wooster, Ohio's Daily Record for a column by Leslie Pearce-Keating, who writes,

I sat down in the auditorium, grabbed my new notebook, and took out a pen. I couldn't believe I was there again, at the Antioch Writer's Conference at Antioch Midwest in Yellow Springs. I'd had lunch with Melissa and Shuly, two dear friends from last year. Heide soon joined us, then Wendy, all friends from 2011. Behind me sat Mary Helen, whom I'd had class with at the Imagination Writer's Workshop in Cleveland before last year's Antioch. Seated in front was Lisa and Robin, other buddies from the writer's group some of us had formed. I'd been dreaming of being at Antioch since last July." (more...)

In Your Words: Reflections on 2012 AWW

Here's what some participants, faculty, and speakers are saying about the 27th annual Antioch Writers' Workshop:

On her blog, Laura Moe's Writing Blog, Laura Moe writes about her experience at the workshop and 2012 faculty member, Les Edgerton
We go to conferences to make connections with other like-minded souls. My friends and family don't mind that I write, but they don't care about the process. Only other writers understand suffering over the word, fretting over using ‘mysterious’ vs. ‘esoteric’ in a sentence or line."

On the tumblr, The Life of Antonia, Antonia-Grazia writes,
I don’t want to get up at six o’clock in the morning, but I am unbelievably jazzed to go back tomorrow and the days after and just sink into the ocean of awesomeness that is this seminar. And the great part about it, even though most writers are introverts, and there have to be at least a hundred people attending, we can all be extroverts together. You can sit down next to whoever, you don’t have to know their name, who cares, and just say, “What kind of stuff do you write?” Instantly you’re in.

In Your Words: Reflections on 2012 Antioch Writers' Workshop

It has been a month since the 27th Annual Antioch Writers' Workshop. Participants, Faculty, Speakers and Staff have written about their experiences online, and we will be bringing their take to you through our blog in a series of posts titled, "In Your Words: Reflections on 2012 AWW."

The first comes from 2012 faculty member, Les Edgerton. On his blog, Les Edgerton on Writing, Les Edgerton writes,
If you can only go to one writer’s conferences/workshops in your lifetime, this is the one I’d recommend. I’ve been to dozens and while they were all wonderful experiences, none were like this for just a pure enjoyable experience for everyone." (more...)

Read Les Edgerton's detailed rundown of the week on his blog.

Guest Post: Deborah Rocheleau

It's hard to explain the magic that happens during the Antioch Writers' Workshop, so we'll let AWW alumni do it! Our first guest post is from Deborah Rocheleau

I took a writing class at Sinclair Community College this spring, all online, so that I never met my professor. Until I signed up for the Antioch Writer's Workshop. When I began researching writing opportunities in my area, I found a surprising amount of overlap in the writing community. My teacher, Rebecca Morean, not only ran the scholarship contest I'd entered, but was on the board of the Antioch Writer's Workshop. At the conference, I met my teacher, but I also got to be a student along with her of the other speakers. Writers of all ages and experiences meet at the conference to learn from each other and offer their own advice and encouragement. For ongoing opportunities, participants can exchange contact information, learn about college writing programs and calls for submissions, follow blogs and Facebook pages, and join writers' groups all across Ohio. I now have a group of local writers I can go to for critique and support, as well as to provide my own feedback and encouragement. And the best part of the conference, the opportunity to network with other writers, is the part that doesn't end with the week.

Share your Antioch Writers' Workshop experience on our blog. Send a guest blog post submission to info@antiochwritersworkshop.com . Put the words, "Guest Blog Post" in the subject line.

FREE TONIGHT, the First Evening of the 27th Annual Antioch Writers' Workshop!

The 27th annual Antioch Writers' Workshop begins today, July 7, in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Tonight's free and open to the public event is:

Saturday, July 7 at 7:00 p.m. -- Bestselling author John Grogan gives a Keynote Address followed by a book signing in the lobby.

John Grogan
John Grogan
Author of Marley & Me, John Grogan was a columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer when he wrote a column saying goodbye to his incorrigible 13-year-old Labrador retriever, Marley. When hundreds of messages flooded his inbox and voicemail the next day, John recalls, "That's when I knew I had a bigger story to tell."

The story became Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog, a book about what a misbehaving dog meant to his family. A touchstone for people worldwide, the book grew into a runaway #1 New York Times bestseller with more than 3 million copies in print in 30 languages. Made into a movie starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, the book is now part of Grogan's engaging and inspirational conversation about family, loyalty, optimism, and what really matters in life. Grogan now also writes a children's book series called The Marley Series. A new dvd for children titled Marly & Me: The Puppy Years was released in 2011.

Grogan has been featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, CBS' The Early Show, National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer, and in The New York TimesUSA Today, and People magazine. Following the release of the film, Grogan was also featured in a P.S.A. for the American Kennel Club in which he discussed responsible dog ownership.

In his popular appearances he shares what his mischievous dog taught him about patience, constancy and acceptance, "that commitment matters and that 'in good times and bad, in sickness and health' really means something."

Grogan's latest New York Times bestseller is The Longest Trip Home. Publishers Weekly called it "a hilarious and touching memoir of his childhood."
