Trudy Krisher

Trudy is the award winning author of several books for young adult readers, including Spite Fences, Uncommon Faith and Fallout. Her first book, the children's story Kathy's Hats: A Story of Hope, portrays the courage of a child battling cancer. Spite Fences earned Trudy the Cuffie Award from Publishers Weekly for 1994's most promising new author. She is also an assistant professor at Sinclair Community College.

YELLOW SPRINGS--Antioch Writers' Workshop and Books & Co are offering the next Second Sunday Free Writers' Workshop on February 12, 2:00-3:30 p.m. at Books & Co at The Greene. Select Antioch Writers' Workshop staff, faculty, and trustees will be on hand to give a preview of the upcoming Genre Saturday Seminar (March 31) and the 27th Annual Summer Workshop (July 7-13).

The free session will include information on the application process for a wide variety of scholarships that cover up to as much as the cost of attending. AWW staff, faculty and trustees will be prepared to answer questions about the workshops as well as provide information on the new B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing at Antioch University Midwest (an AWW partner).

"We're excited to get the word out about the excellent workshops we have coming up this year," said AWW director Sharon Short. "These workshops are ideal opportunities for writers at any stage in the process to work closely with accomplished professionals in the writing world."

Sandi Wisenberg

Sandi is the author of two collections, The Sweetheart Is In, and Holocaust Girls: History, Memory, & Other Obsessions, and The Adventures of Cancer Bitch,

She was a feature writer for the Miami Herald and has published prose and poetry in The New Yorker, Ploughshares, Tikkun,New England Review, Michigan Quarterly Review and many other places. As winner of Best in Show, Davis received a full scholarship to attend the 27th Annual Summer Workshop with the poetry afternoon seminar.

Jim Daniels

Jim has taught creative writing at Carnegie Mellon University since 1981. Recent books include Having a Little Talk with Capital P PoetryTrigger Man. In 2007, he was awarded the Blue Lynx Poetry Prize for his collection, Revolt of the Crash-Test Dummies. His poems have been featured on Garrison Keillor's "Writer's Almanac," in Billy Collins' Poetry 180 anthologies, and Ted Kooser's "American Life in Poetry" series. He has received the Brittingham Prize for Poetry, two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and two from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Crystal is the author of Blackberries, Blackberries and Water Street. Nominated for both the Orange Prize and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, she has received recognition from The Kentucky Foundation for Women, The Kentucky Arts Council, The Mary Anderson Center for the Arts, The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and is a recipient of the Chaffin Award for Appalachian Literature. Her short stories, poems and essays have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. Hallie Ephron

The Antioch Writers' Workshop is pleased to announce that the 2012 AWW Morning Fiction Faculty will be award-winning author Hallie Ephron.

Ephron is the author of over 10 books, including the Dr. Peter Zak mystery series and the novel Never Tell a Lie (HarperCollins, 2009), which Publishers Weekly called "stunning" and a "deliciously creepy tale of obsession." The book has been translated into 7 languages and was nominated for multiple awards, including the Mary Higgins Clark Award. It won the David Award for best mystery of 2009. Never Tell a Lie was adapted for film as And Baby Will Fall for the Lifetime Movie Network.

Ephron is an award-winning book reviewer for the Boston Globe and has taught elementary school, at the college level, and in corporations. In addition, Ephron is active in writing workshops and retreats, combining her love of writing and teaching.

The Antioch Writers' Workshop is pleased to announce that bestselling author John Grogan will be the 2012 AWW Keynote Speaker, delivering his address on the evening of Saturday, July 7, 2012, 7:00 p.m. at Antioch University Midwest. This event is open to the public.

Then, on Sunday, July 8, 2012, for Antioch Writers' Workshop participants only, John will deliver a master class for all participants, sure to inspire, motivate and jumpstart attendees, whether they write fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. This special creative writing master class for AWW 2012 participants will be from 9:00-11:30, also at Antioch University Midwest.

Author of Marley & Me, John Grogan was a columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer when he wrote a column saying goodbye to his incorrigible 13-year-old Labrador retriever, Marley. When hundreds of messages flooded his inbox and voicemail the next day, John recalls, "That's when I knew I had a bigger story to tell."

NOV. 1 DEADLINE APPROACHING for Mock Turtle / AWW Poetry Contest

The Antioch Writers Workshop and Mock Turtle have partnered up to conduct a special poetry contest open to all writers in the greater Dayton, Ohio area.

The deadline for contest entries is on Tuesday, November 1. Send up to two poetry submissions per entrant for consideration in an adult or teen category. Poetry should be 50 lines or fewer.

Two awards will be made in each category and one Best in Show award will be made. The Best in Show award winner will receive a full scholarship to attend the 2012 AWW summer workshop including the poetry afternoon seminar. First place awards are $125 toward 2012 AWW summer workshop.

YELLOW SPRINGS, OH--As part of the Antioch Writers' Workshop annual tradition, readings by 2011 AWW keynote speakers, faculty, and selected participants will be free and open to the public at 7:00pm July 9 through 15 at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

The free, open to the public readings begin at 7:00pm on Saturday, July 9 with New York Timesbestselling author and keynote speaker, Nancy Pickard. Pickard is the author of 18 novels and dozens of short stories, and the winner of multiple Agatha, Anthony and Macavity awards, plus the Barry, Shamus and American Mystery awards. The address will be followed by a book signing with Pickard.

On Sunday, July 10, AWW faculty Lucrecia Guerrero, Jim Daniels and Matthew Goodman, will each read and sign books. Lucrecia Guerrero is the author of the novel Tree of Sighs. Her short stories have been anthologized in The Best of the West, 2009 and Fantasmas and have been published in numerous literary journals. Jim Daniels has published thirteen collections of poetry, including From Milltown to Malltown. His fourth book of short stories,Trigger Man will be published in Fall 2011. Matthew Goodman is the author of the acclaimed narrative history The Sun and the Moon: The Remarkable True Account of Hoaxers, Showmen, Dueling Journalists, and Lunar Man-Bats in Nineteenth-Century New York. The book was named a 2008 Best Book of the Year by The Economist.

On Monday, July 11, Kristina Purnhagen McBride will give a "first book talk" followed by a reading with Katrina Kittle. McBride is an AWW alumna and the author of the Young Adult novel, The Tension of Opposites. Kittle Katrina Kittle is the author of Traveling Light, Two Truths and a Lie and The Kindness of Strangers. Her fourth novel, The Blessings of the Animals, was released in 2010.

Rakesh Satyal, Nancy Pickard, and Joyce Dyer will read on Tuesday, July 12. Rakesh Satyal, author of Blue Boy, has been published in a variety of magazines and anthologies. As an associate editor at Random House, Satyal worked for such authors as Bill Bryson, Chuck Palahniuk, Bill O'Reilly, and Gore Vidal, and edited a number of books on the Doubleday Broadway list. Joyce Dyer is the author of four books including, most recently, Goosetown: Reconstructing an Akron Neighborhood (2010).

On Wednesday, July 13, participants of the Antioch Writers' Workshop will share their work with the public. This reading will take place at the Emporium in Yellow Springs.

A reading will take place on Thursday, July 14, with AWW faculty Becky Morean, Jamey Dunham and Martha Moody, followed by book signing. Rebecca Morean is the author of In the Dead of Winteralong with numerous stories and articles. Jamey Dunham's award-winning prose poems have been published widely and appear in several anthologies including The Best American Poetry 2005(Scribner, 2005). Dunham's poetry collection The Bible of Lost Pets (Salt Modern Poets, 2009) was the inaugural winner of the Crashaw Prize. Martha Moody was a private practice internist for 15 years and is the author of three novels.

The 2011 Workshop will culminate on Friday, July 15, with a reading by participants of the AWW Afternoon Seminar who have been selected by the AWW faculty.

Kevin Morgan Watson. Kevin is the founder of Press 53 and serves as the Short Fiction Editor. As a publisher, he has worked with writers ranging from first-time published authors to winners of the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize.

Writing Tips:

1. Pay attention to the details: Sloppy editing will kill a great story. Before you send your work out, make sure it looks nice.

2. Relax and tell your story: Pay attention to dialogue; make it natural. Engage the reader's senses. Rather than telling your story, allow the reader to walk alongside your characters and experienced the story.

3. Don't be in a big rush to publish: Once your work is out there, you can't take it back. Make sure you are happy with your story or poem, and then take the time to find the right home for it. Today, there are more places to publish than ever before. But having your story or poetry in a journal alongside average writing or sloppy editing will make you look just as average and sloppy. Take care and take time.

The deadline to register for A La Carte options for the 2011 Antioch Writers' Workshop has been extended to July 2.

Participants can choose from Morning Only Classes, the Afternoon Only Focus on Form seminar, or the Saturday Seminar. You can attend the Saturday Seminar as a stand-alone experience or in combination with EITHER Morning Only Classes OR Afternoon Only Focus on Form.

Morning Only

Morning Only classes give writers the inspiration they need to go home and write in the afternoon. The Morning Only option begins with a continental breakfast followed by a fiction seminar led by New York Times bestselling author Nancy Pickard. Next is the Professional Connections Series with talks by editor Kevin Morgan Watson and visiting agents Roseanne Wells and Rachel Coyne who will address the ins and outs of publishing. Agatha-nominated author Heather Webber will also discuss "How to query" and the pros and cons of self-publishing. Finally, Morning Only participants will attend a poetry seminar with Jim Daniels, author of thirteen collections of poetry, followed by a creative nonfiction seminar led by acclaimed authorMatthew Goodman.

Afternoon Only: Focus on Form

Not a morning person? Try the Afternoon Only option. This option is also great for those considering exploring other genres. The Afternoon Only Focus on Form seminar led by novelist, short story writer, essayist and grant writer Rebecca Morean is designed to help participants start new pieces in three genres. Guest lecturers in poetry, fiction and nonfiction will supplement the guidance and mentoring provided by Morean.

Rebecca Morean is an assistant professor of English at Sinclair Community College and the director for the college's annual creative writing contest. She is the author of In the Dead of Winter (St. Martin's Press) along with numerous stories and articles. Morean also serves as a board member for the Antioch Writers' Workshop. Most recently, Morean's personal essay, "The wedding bouquet I can't throw away," which she originally submitted through "Open Salon" at Salon.com was an editor's pick and cross-posted in the Life section of Salon.com.

Saturday Seminar

The Saturday Seminar is a loaded one day event, perfect for those with busy summer schedules and a great way to meet other writers, jump-start new projects, or explore techniques to help complete a project already underway.

After check-in and a continental breakfast, participants are greeted by a Saturday Morning Keynote with Tim Waggoner, the author of over 20 novels and two short story collections. Next, participants choose three of four Break-Out Sessions:

"To Plot or Not To Plot," led by Tim Waggoner, explores the techniques of developing plot.
"Creating Great Characters," led by AWW Alumna and First Book Speaker Kristina Purnhagen McBride, examines how authors can develop characters that ensure your story is compelling.
"Voice for Fiction Writers and Poets" will help writers of all genres find their unique voice to reach readers' hearts with the guidance of two-time Individual Excellence Award winner Chuck Freeland.
"Getting Unstuck and Undone!" led by Rebecca Morean, is a motivational, inspirational session designed to help writers awaken creativity and "break free on the page."

After three of the four Break-Out Sessions, participants attend a question and answer session with the Saturday Seminar Faculty followed by a book signing by Saturday Seminar Faculty. Finally, participants are welcomed to a dessert and wine reception followed by the Antioch Writers' Workshop 26th Annual Event Keynote and book-signing with Nancy Pickard.

Social Networking and the New Author

Social networking is pervasive in today's world. So pervasive, that according to a recent article on The Atlantic, even Flannery O'Connor and Charles Dickens have a Twitter account. Authors are learning to embrace the new media, and it provides new ways for emerging authors to promote themselves.

"I've used Twitter and Facebook to promote my work," said last year's Dayton Daily News / Antioch Writers' Workshop contest winner, Kate Geiselman. "It's not all about self-promotion; it is about the mantra that 'stuff begets stuff.'" Kate has published two essays in The Rumpus, one at Salon.com, and has a forthcoming essay in McSweeney's Internet Tendency. Those registered for the full-week experience of the 2011 Antioch Writers' Workshop have the unique opportunity to participate in pitch sessions with visiting literary agents as well as attend talks in the Professional Connections Series. Suzie Townsend, who originally planned to join us at this summer's workshop, has had a conflict arise and can't be with us. However, we're pleased to announce Rachel Coyne as one of the TWO fantastic agents who will be joining the 2011 AWW Faculty.

Twelve year publishing industry veteran Rachel Coyne from FinePrint Literary Management will also be part of the 2011 AWW faculty. Rachel has represented fourNew York Times bestselling authors, and is on the lookout for the fifth. She represents young adult novels of all stripes (historical, fantasy, romance, contemporary, literary, humorous), as well as middle grade novels, especially with a humorous voice. She's also looking for adult historical, fantasy, urban fantasy and science fiction.

Writing Tips:

1. Opening pages are important. Make sure your story begins in an exciting place. I often read openings where the character wakes up in the morning, gets ready for school or work, eats breakfast... And there's nothing compelling happening yet. When readers browse in a bookstore, if the first page doesn't grab them, they'll put the book back on the shelf. If you open on an exciting moment, you'll grab readers and get them emotionally invested in your character to keep them reading to find out what will happen next. Remember, if your characters are feeling bored or calm, your readers will start to snooze. If your characters are feeling strong emotions like fear or anger or longing, your readers will feel that with them, and they'll feel compelled to keep reading.

2. Before you submit, proofread your work carefully. Read your dialogue out loud to make sure it sounds natural, and ask a friend to read through it and catch anything you might have missed. Ask your reader to note any places where they felt confused. Sometimes authors know things about the story, such as a character's motivation, but they don't convey it clearly in their manuscript. Your reader will have more objectivity, and can let you know whether or not everything you want to convey in your story is coming across clearly to readers.

3. When it's time to submit, check each agency's website and read their submission guidelines. You can and should submit multiple queries at a time, but submit to only one agent at a time within an agency. (We often refer authors to each other, and it can cause confusion if two agents request the same manuscript within the same agency.) Be sure to follow the individual agent's guidelines, because some agents want just a query letter while others also want a synopsis and/or first pages. Also, some agents only accept email queries, so you could be wasting your time and paper if you submit by regular mail. Other times, agents aren't currently looking for clients and note this on their website. Also, make sure the agent handles the type of work you write.

Roseanne Wells of Marianne Strong Literary Agency and arts reviewer for PlayShakespeare.com is one of two new visiting literary agents for the 2011 Antioch Writers' Workshop. Roseanne is interested in narrative nonfiction, science (popular or trade, not academic), history, true crime, religion, travel, humor, food/cooking, and similar subjects. She is also on the lookout for strong literary fiction, YA, sci-fi, fantasy, and smart detective novels (more Sherlock Holmes than cozy mysteries).

Writing Tips:

1. Begin with the story. Don't spend your pages telling backstory (why the main character doesn't like his mother, how he's allergic to mustard, that time that he got to second base with a girl, etc.) It's important to draw your reader in with action and character development in that first sentence, paragraph, and page--plus, feeding the reader the information over the course of the book will give you more opportunities to create dramatic tension and heighten the stakes.

2. World-building is essential, in all types of fiction and even narrative nonfiction. I want to feel like I am there with the character. And creating an atmosphere (how chilly the beach was) can be much more effective than describing the scenic details (the sky was baby blue, and the ocean was azure).

3. Always proofread, and then have someone else proofread. A great manuscript can dilute grammatical errors, but a bad story--or even a perfectly fine one that just doesn't quite stand out--will make those mistakes big red flags.

Young Writers' Workshop Scholarships Still Available

The May 15 deadline for area writers ages 15-18 to apply for the Antioch Writers' Workshop Young Writers program is fast approaching!

For the second year in a row, Antioch Writers' Workshop-a nationally recognized creative writing workshop since 1986-offers an opportunity for young writers (those entering 10^th-12^th grades in fall 2011, or ages 15-18) to attend the workshop held at Antioch University McGregor in Yellow Springs, July 9-15.

Young writers must submit three pages of creative writing and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, librarian, coach or youth program leader, to the workshop by May 15. Selected writers receive an AWW Young Writers' Scholarship in the amount of $375.00, reducing the total cost of attending to $300.00 for a full week of writing classes, a special writing seminar, breakfasts and lunches.

The Young Writers' program includes attendance to the workshop's morning classes with all participants and the Young Writers' Afternoon Seminar led by local and nationally renowned author Katrina Kittle (The Kindness of Strangers). During the seminar, selected writers will work on individual projects and develop their creative writing craft.

This opportunity is open to students who live in the Ohio counties of Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Clark, Clinton, Fayette, Madison and Warren.

"Last year was the first year we introduced this program," says Sharon Short, Director, Antioch Writers' Workshop. "The fourteen students in last year's Young Writers' program developed their creative writing craft, learned from outstanding mentors, and created long-lasting friendships. We really see this as a way to help develop the next generation of creative writers of fiction, poetry and nonfiction, and we're excited to again offer this program."

Rebecca Morean is an assistant professor of English at Sinclair Community College and the director for the college's annual creative writing contest. She offers the following three quick tips to writers:
1. Do it--don't talk about doing it or how you can't do it.
2. Give yourself permission to abandon chronology--just write that scene you really want to write.
3. Take out "that" whenever you can, even if it means rewriting the sentence.

Scholarship Entry Deadline for AWW 2011 Approaches

The deadline for all 2011 Antioch Writers' Workshop scholarship entry submissions is Friday, April 15, 2011. First place for each of the three annually awarded AWW scholarships receives a full waiver of registration and tuition for the Full Week experience ($735.00 value). Second place receives a half waiver of registration and tuition ($367.00 value). Any adult (over age 18) from anywhere in the United States is eligible.

Single parents who are committed to writing and who could not otherwise attend the workshop are eligible for the Betty Crumrine Scholarship. The scholarship was created by friends in memory of Betty Crumrine, who lived and wrote in Yellow Springs and participated in the Antioch Writers' Workshop from 1986 until 1990. As a full time member of the Miami Valley Arts Council and later at the Miami Literacy Council, Betty Crumrine raised three children and took care of her own mother while writing true confession stories and young adult novels. In March 1991, Crumrine died of cancer. In honor of her encouragement of new writers, the Antioch Writers' Workshop welcomes applications from beginning writers as well as those in mid-career. Applicants for the Betty Crumrine Scholarship must follow the general submission requirements and submit a one-page letter explaining writing experience and plans and need for financial aid.

The Judson Jerome Poetry Scholarship is named for poet, nonfiction writer, textbook author, professor, poetry editor, and co-founder of Antioch Writers' Workshop, Judson Jerome. Applicants for the Judson Jerome Poetry Scholarship must submit a poetry sample and conform to the general submission guidelines as wells as a brief (not longer than one page) bio.

Writers who are nominated by someone who can testify to his or her qualifications as both a writer and a community member are eligible for the Bill Baker Scholarship. Bill Baker was co-founder of the Antioch Writers' Workshop, as well as a writer of textbooks, journalist, and fiction author. To nominate a writer for the Bill Baker Scholarship, send the nominee's name, contact information, a short sample of the nominee's writing conforming to the general submission guidelines, and a 1-2 page essay illustrating the nominee's braver, innovation, or significant contribution to their community.

First and second place scholarship recipients must cover their own travel, lodging, food and other accommodations for the week. Manuscript critique, book purchases, and other expenses are not covered. Recipients must also agree to have their name and likeness used on the AWW web site, blog, email newsletter, press releases, and other publicity materials. All entries must be received by April 15, if mailing to Antioch Writers' Workshop, c/o Antioch University Midwest, 900 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387, or sent by that date if submitting via email. The “best of show” entry will receive a full scholarship to AWW’s July 9-15 workshop. First place winners in the adult and teen categories will receive a scholarship to the workshop’s Saturday Seminar on July 9. The first place winner of the youth category will receive a gift certificate to Books & Co.

Winning stories will be published in the Dayton Daily News. Other top stories will be published at DaytonDailyNews.com and on the AWW’s website.

Requirements for the Dayton Daily News/Antioch Writers’ Workshop Creative Writing Competition are as follows:

Short story requirements: Fiction only. No memoirs or essays.

Stories must be original and unpublished. Writers may submit only one story. Stories must be typed, double-spaced and stapled in the upper left corner. No binders.

Cover page: Each entry must have a cover page with: title(s), writer’s name, age, full address, e-mail address and daytime, evening and cell-phone numbers.

Age categories: Youth (12 years old and younger); Teen (13 to 18 years old); and Adult (19 and older). Entrants must live in the Dayton Daily News circulation area.

Deadline: Entries must be postmarked by March 25

Entry fees: None.

Ohio Poets Spring into National Poetry Month

Co-sponsors the Ohio Poetry Association and the Antioch Writers Workshop will usher in National Poetry Month with a reading by Ohio poets on Saturday, March 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Antioch University Midwest. Readings by featured poets Jamey Dunham, Connie Willett Everett, T.M. Göttl and Herbert Woodward Martin will be followed by an opportunity for poets to meet and share their work with the public. "We're delighted to not only bring these masterful poets to the stage, but delighted as well to encourage poets to bring several poems to read for up to five minutes during the open microphone reading," said Sharon Short, Director of AWW.

Prose poet Jamey Dunham of Cincinnati is an Assistant Professor of English at Sinclair Community College, where he edits the journal “Flights.” His poems have appeared in “Sentence,” “Fence” and “Boston Review” among other journals. His poem “An American Story” was included in the anthology “Great American Prose Poems: Poe to the Present.”

Columbus poet Connie Willett Everett is senior editor for Pudding House Publications, and she co-coordinates the Poetry Forum at Rumba Cafe in Columbus, Ohio. She received degrees from Ohio University and Bowling Green State University, including a MFA in creative writing. Everett served as fiction editor for “Heartlands Magazine” for 15 years, and she has presented several workshops in her community.

T.M. Göttl of Brunswick is Vice President of the Ohio Poetry Association and a member of the Buffalo ZEF Creative Community. Her work is online, in publications such as “Pudding Magazine” and “Verse Wisconsin” and has been heard on 91.3 WAPS Akron and 89.7 WOSU Columbus. She is the author of the full-length collection “Stretching the Window” and the chapbook “Angels and Copper.”

Herbert Woodward Martin of Dayton is an acclaimed poet, professor, and Paul Laurence Dunbar interpreter. His four books of poetry include “The Forms of Silence.” He has also written an opera, “Paul Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground.”

Tips from AWW Visiting Agent and Editor

We recently asked our AWW 2011 visiting agent and visting editor to share their top three writing tips.

Suzie Townsend, of Fine Print Literary, is actively looking for fiction and non-fiction: specifically Middle Grade and YA novels (all subgenres, but particularly literary projects), adult romance (historical and paranormal), and fantasy (urban fantasy, science fiction, steampunk, epic fantasy).

She says that her top three "quick tips" for aspiring writers are:

1. Tell a good story by starting where the story begins. (So many manuscripts I read actually start at chapter 3)
2. Good writing is not writing. Good writing is editing. (So get it all out on the page and then go back and really dive into the editing process)
3. Read. Read thousands of books in your genre.

Kevin Morgan Watson is founder of Press 53 and serves as the Short Fiction Editor. As a publisher, he has worked with writers ranging from first-time published authors to winners of the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize. His top three tips:

1. Pay attention to the details: Sloppy editing will kill a great story. Before you send your work out, make sure it looks nice.
2. Relax and tell your story: Pay attention to dialogue; make it natural. Engage the reader's senses. Rather than telling your story, allow the reader to walk alongside your characters and experienced the story.
3. Don't be in a big rush to publish: Once your work is out there, you can't take it back. Make sure you are happy with your story or poem, and then take the time to find the right home for it. Today, there are more places to publish than ever before. But having your story or poetry in a journal alongside average writing or sloppy editing will make you look just as average and sloppy. Take care and take time.

•Attend Morning Classes with all Antioch Writers' Workshop participants.

April is National Poetry Month. If you are a poet, poetry reader/fan, or simply interested in experiencing fantastic poetry, treat yourself to a Poetry Reading/Open Mic co-sponsored by AWW and the Ohio Poetry Association!

This event will be held Saturday, March 26, 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Antioch University Midwest (900 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio.)

Four fabulous featured readers will get the event started:
•T.M. Gottl--current Vice President of the Ohio Poetry Association and member of the Buffalo ZEF Creative Community. Her work has been found online and in print, in many publications and in her full-length collection Stretching the Window and chapbook Angels and Copper.

•Jamey Dunham is a prose poet and an Assistant Professor of English at Sinclair Community College, where he edits the journal Flights. His poems have appeared in many journals and his poem "An American Story" was included in the anthology Great American Prose Poems: Poe to the Present. Jamey is teaching the afternoon seminar on poetry writing at this year's AWW Full Week Workshop.

•Connie Willett Everett received degrees from Ohio University and Bowling Green State University, including an MFA in creative writing. For fifteen years, she was fiction editor for Heartlands Magazine (Bottom Dog Press), and she is a senior editor for Pudding House Publications.

•Herbert Woodward Martin is an acclaimed poet, professor, and Paul Laurence Dunbar interpreter. His four books of poetry include The Forms of Silence. He has also written an opera, Paul Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground. He has taught many times at past Antioch Writers' Workshops.
Following these readings will be an open mic for any poets who wish to participate! (Open mic poets may read 2 pieces or for up to 5 minutes.) Please plan to arrive about 15 minutes early (at 1:45 p.m.) to sign up for the open mic.

After the readings and open mic, please plan to stay for refreshments and socializing!

We recently asked Nancy Pickard to share her top three writing tips.

Nancy is the New York Times bestselling author of 18 novels and dozens of short stories. • If anybody makes you feel like not writing, run like hell in the opposite direction.

• It's all process. Failure is process. Rejection is process. Rewriting is process. Throwing it away and starting over is process. Getting it right is process. Even getting published is process. If we were inventors or scientists we'd think nothing of "failing." We'd just clean our test tubes, take what we learned from "failing," and then start the next experiment. Excuse me while I adjust my lab coat and get back to work on my book.

• It's not easy. Anybody who tells you it should be easy has never written anything worth reading.

Of course we'd love for you to attend the Full Week Antioch Writers' Workshop (and we're pretty sure you'd like to, too)... but we also realize that sometimes a Full Week commitment just doesn't fit a writer's schedule, budget or perhaps even where she or he is on the writing path.

That's why last year we introduced A La Carte Options (all held at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs, Ohio),perfect for writers who:
• Are just getting started... or need a refresher or a dose of inspiration
• Don't have a full week available to attend the full conference
• Want to try a portion of the workshop before committing to attending for the full week in a future year.

Our A La Carte Options are:

Saturday Seminar--This can be attended by itself, July 9, 2011, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., for $125.00. (Full Week Participants, or those attending either Morning Only or Afternoon Only A La Carte Options, may add on the Saturday Seminar for a discounted fee of $75.00)

Morning Only Classes--Attend Morning Classes with all participants, Monday July 11, through Friday July 15, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Kick off your moning with a complimentary continental breakfast, and then attend lectures in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and the business of writing. Attention, local writers! We’ve opened the call for entries for the newspaper’s 15th annual writing contest, held in partnership with the Antioch Writers’ Workshop.

The AWW is providing scholarships to this summer’s workshop as prizes for the contest’s top writers. The “best of show” writer will receive a full scholarship to the July 9-15 workshop. First place winners in the adult and teen categories will receive a scholarship to the workshop’s Saturday Seminar, July 9. First place winner of the youth category will receive a gift certificate to Books & Co.

Winning stories will be published in the Dayton Daily News. Other top stories will be published at DaytonDailyNews.com and on the workshop’s site.  Here are the rules and deadlines for this year’s contest:

Short story requirements: Fiction only. No memoirs or essays.

Length: 1,800 words maximum.

Stories must be original and unpublished. Writers may submit only one story. Stories must be typed, double-spaced and stapled in the upper left corner. No binders.

Cover page: Each entry must have a cover page with: title(s), writer’s name, age, full address, e-mail address and daytime, evening and cell-phone numbers.

Age categories: Youth (12 years old and younger); Teen (13 to 18 years old); and Adult (19 and older). Entrants must live in the Dayton Daily News circulation area.

Deadline: Entries must be postmarked by March 25

Entry fees: None.

Manuscripts: Hard copy only; no electronic submissions. Manuscripts will not be returned. Because of the volume, we cannot confirm receipt of individual entries over the phone.

AWW Participant/Faculty News... and Three Great Writing Tips!

Two authors closely associated with the Antioch Writers' Workshop have been named 2010 recipients of the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District's Literary Fellowships in recognition of their work: AWW Director Sharon Short, and AWW Young Writers' Seminar Instructor Katrina Kittle. Both Sharon and Katrina are AWW alumni and, since first attending, have served AWW in numerous roles.

From AWW alumni (2009) and instructor (Saturday Seminar, 2010) Julie Moore: "Hi, Sharon. I thought you'd like to know that a poem of mine workshopped in the 2009 AWW was just nominated for a Pushcart Prize. The poem is "The Problem with School," which appeared in the summer issue of Verse Wisconsin. My workshop leader that year was Ed Davis, and I read that poem at AWW's closing program where I received many favorable responses. Three cheers (again) for AWW!"

And from Donald Ray Pollock (Afternoon Fiction instructor, 2010): Don's new novel, THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME, has been accepted for publication by Doubleday and will be available fall 2011. The novel is set in the 1950s and 1960s and centers on the convergent lives of a tough but morally-upright young man from Ohio, a pair of serial killers who prey on hitchhikers, and an itinerant, spider-handling preacher and his crippled guitar virtuoso accompanist.

We asked Don to share three pieces of writing advice. His suggestions:
1. Write at least 90 minutes (a bare minimum) every day.
2. Read 5-8 books per month. Try new stuff: if you're a Stephen King fanactic, read a couple Barbara Pym or Muriel Sparks novels. No matter what you write, read some poetry.
3. Turn off the electronic junk--cell phones, internet, etc.--for at least a couple hours every day (especially when you're writing!).

Morning Poetry-Jim Daniels

Jim Daniels has published thirteen collections of poetry, including, most recently, From Milltown to Malltown, a collaborative book with photographer Charlee Brodsky and writer Jane McCafferty, and Having a Little Talk with Capital P Poetry. His fourth book of short stories, Trigger Man will be published in Fall 2011. He is the Thomas Stockman Baker Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University.

Morning Creative Nonfiction-Matthew Goodman

Matthew Goodman is the author, most recently, of the acclaimed narrative history The Sun and the Moon: The Remarkable True Account of Hoaxers, Showmen, Dueling Journalists, and Lunar Man-Bats in Nineteenth-Century New York (Basic Books, 2008). The book was named a 2008 Best Book of the Year by The Economist magazine and was selected as an Original Voices book by Borders bookstores nationwide. The book on which he is currently at work, Ahead of Time: The Story of Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World, will be published by Random House.

Afternoon Fiction Seminar-Martha Moody

Martha has had three novels published by Riverhead Books: Best Friends (a Target "Book-Marked" selection), The Office of Desire (one of Kirkus Review's Best Books of 2007) and her latest, Sometimes Mine, described in the online magazine Salon as a "literary weepie." Moody was a private practice internist for 15 years. Currently she is retired from private practice and volunteers as medical director at a clinic for the working poor.

Afternoon Fiction Seminar-Rakesh Satyal

Rakesh Satyal is author of Blue Boy and has been published in a variety of magazines and anthologies. He is currently an editor at HarperCollins, where he edits such authors as international superstar Paolo Coelho, horror maestro Clive Barker, beloved novelist Armistead Maupin, and humorist Paul Rudnick.

Afternoon Fiction Seminar-Lucrecia Guerrero

Lucrecia Guerrero's novel Tree of Sighs, Bilingual Press (Arizona State University) received a Christopher Isherwood Foundation Award and a Montgomery County Cultural District Arts Fellowship. Her short stories have been published in numerous literary journals such as The Antioch Review and The Louisville Review. Chasing Shadows, her linked collection of short stories, was published by Chronicle Books.

Afternoon Poetry Seminar-Jamey Dunham

Jamey is a prose poet and an Assistant Professor of English at Sinclair Community College, where he edits the journal Flights. His poems have appeared in Sentence, Paragraph, Key Stach(el), Fence, Boston Review, and ACM among other journals.

Afternoon Memoir and Personal Essay Seminar-Joyce Dyer

Joyce Dyer is John S. Kenyon Professor of English and director of the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. Dyer is the author of four books including Goosetown: Reconstructing an Akron Neighborhood (2010). She has published essays in magazines such as North American Review, cream city review, and High Plains Literary Review. She is currently at work on a long project about John Brown.

Focus on Form Seminar (available to both Full Week and Afternoon Only A La Carte Participants)-Becky Morean

Becky is the author of In the Dead of Winter (St. Martin's Press) along with numerous stories and articles. An assistant professor of English at Sinclair Community College, she's the director for the college's annual creative writing contest. She also serves as a board member for the Antioch Writers' Workshop, and teaches workshops on a variety of writing-related topics.

Afternoon Young Writers Seminar (specifically for Miami Valley, Ohio area writers ages 15-18)-Katrina Kittle

Katrina Kittle is the author of Traveling Light and Two Truths and a Lie and The Kindness of Strangers. Her fourth novel, The Blessings of the Animals was released in the summer of 2010 and was an Indie Next pick and a Midwest Connections pick. Her first young adult novel, Reasons To Be Happy, will be published by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky in fall of 2011. Kittle has extensive experience teaching middle school and high school students.

Katrina Kittle Featured in WYSO Interview

From WYSO (91.3--Public Radio for the Miami Valley): A conversation with local author Katrina Kittle about her new novel, The Blessings of the Animals. The Blessings of the Animals, Katrina Kittle (Harper Perennial) by Vick Mickunas November 1, 2010 Katrina Kittle's fourth novel, "The Blessings of the Animals" is the story of a marriage. As the book opens Cami Anderson's marriage is falling apart. Anderson, a veterinarian, seeks refuge in her work. She discovers that her animal companions can be more dependable and affectionate than some of her human companions have been.

Katrina Kittle is a resident of Dayton. In this interview she discussed her writing career and how it has been nurtured and sustained through her long association with the Antioch Writer's Workshop in Yellow Springs. This was Kittle's third visit to the Book Nook on WYSO.

Vick Mickunas created the Book Nook author interview program for WYSO in 1994. Over the years he has produced more than 1200 interviews with writers, musicians, poets, politicians, and celebrities. Cyndi Pauwels was one of the 2010 AWW's First Book speakers as author of Historic Warren County: An Illustrated History. That book has been awarded the 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award in History Outreach by the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums (OAHSM). Congratulations to Cyndi and to the book's sponsor, The Heritage Advisory Council.

Via Wes Gilbert--another 2010 AWW workfellow extraordinaire--we've learned that Bob Barlow, AWW participant, has published his short fiction, How I Know She Loves Me, on WordRiot.com. Bob read this piece at the AWW 2010 open mic night to an enthusiastic response. Congratulations, Bob!

Herbert Woodward Martin Featured on WMUB/WVXU Public Radio Today

Herbert Woodward Martin, renowned poet and Paul Laurence Dunbar expert, is a frequent instructor for Antioch Writers' Workshop--most recently, he guest-taught a poetry session for the 2010 AWW "Focus on Form" afternoon seminar this past summer.

Dayton Daily News writer Terry Morris, in his Footlights column, reported on Oct. 10, 2010: "Herbert Woodward Martin will portray and discuss famed poet Paul Laurence Dunbar at 8 p.m. today, on public radio stations 91.7 WVXU-FM and 88.5 WMUB-FM. Martin, of Dayton, is a Dunbar scholar, professor emeritus and poet in residence at the University of Dayton. The 60-minute program will include selections from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s new CD recording of William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1 (“African American”). Martin will read more than a dozen of Dunbar’s poems, plus three of his own. Abbey Lincoln will perform a song inspired by Dunbar’s poetry."

The local, independent Mock Turtle Zine is accepting submissions for its upcoming issue. The publication will run in conjunction with Urban Nights on Friday, September 10. Submissions must be received by Friday, August 27, for consideration.

Mock Turtle Zine is an independent publishing effort undertaken to give artists and authors in Dayton, Ohio, and surrounding areas a vehicle for sharing their work. The zine accepts poetry, song lyrics, fiction and nonfiction as well as visual art.

Ways to Promote Yourself Before AND After You're Published

Workfellow Wes Gilbert shares pointers that Jeff Marks provided at AWW this year about promoting yourself both before and after you're published.

Before you're published:
1. Buy your website domain name.
2. Have a simple but effective website and keep it up-to-date.
3. Set up a blog and post regularly (weekly is great; monthly is minimum.)
4. Go to writers' conferences and get to know your peers and publishing professionals.

After you're published... keep doing all of the above, and:
1. Consider building up your audience through social media tools like Facebook and Twitter.
2. Contact book stores and get to know managers to set up signings.
3. Get in touch with local radio stations for interviews on community programs.
4. Write interviews or articles relating to your book topic for magazines.

Next year's AWW is July 9-15, 2011.

Tips and pointers from Visiting Agent April Eberhardt

AWW enjoyed learning from visiting agent April Eberhardt of Kimberley Cameron & Associates. Assistant Director Holly Hudson and Workfellow Wes Gilbert share these three tips from her talk:

1. April points out that self-publishing will increasingly become a viable alternative for many writers--for example, if you're a writer who gives speeches on a specific topic, and you have a book that is about that topic.

2. Whether you're published traditionally or not, you will need to be proactive about promoting your work.

3. Remember, as a writer you want to reach readers... and after you've written a great book, essay, poem, or story, you need to find ways to connect with them, whether through a blog, epublishing or other growing ways of publishing, so stay up-to-date on new technology.

Tips and pointers from visiting agent Janet Reid

AWW was privileged to have two agents visit this year! One was Janet Reid, from Fine Print Literary Management. Workfellow Wes Gilbert shares the six things Janet says writers MUST know before working with an agent:
1. What type of book you're writing--fiction, nonfiction, genre, etc.
2. Understand agents represent and advocate for you, but typically they are not editors or sounding boards.
3. Remember that publishers add value to your work and give you access to a market you can't reach.
4. Warning signs for non-legitimate agents and publishers: asking you for morney, and not adding value.
5. Mistakes won't kill you (or your career).
6. The best way to be a great writer is to be a great reader.

Saturday Seminar Round Up

Sixty-five writers attended AWW's first ever Saturday Seminar on July 10. Here are some highlights from AWW Workfellow Wes Gilbert:

1. Morning Keynoter and fiction teacher Carrie Bebris noted that everything in fiction--including plot--comes first from character; not so much surface details, but what those details represent about the character. Carrie shared a brief exercise for getting to know your character better: write a first-person paragraph in which the character introduces him or herself.

2. Heather Webber taught "Nuts and Bolts of Publishing and How to Query." Heather pointed out it's important to remember a query is a business letter. Describe your work in present tense. And don't apologize in your letter (e.g., for not being published.)

Jeff Bruce shared pointers on how to write non-fiction, while Becky Morean gave tips on how to bring out and enjoy your inner writer.

Next year's AWW will be July 9-15, 2011.
