Free Events at the 2012 Antioch Writers' Workshop!

This year’s workshop features several events that are free and open to the public. All events take place in the auditorium at Antioch University Midwest unless noted otherwise.

Saturday, July 7 at 7:00 p.m. -- Bestselling author John Grogan gives a Keynote Address followed by a book signing in the lobby.

Sunday, July 8, 7:00 p.m. -- Faculty Readings authors Linda Gerber, Jim Daniels, Trudy Krisher  followed by book signing in the lobby.

Monday, July 9, 7:00 p.m. -- Faculty Readings by Hallie Ephron, Sandi Wisenberg, and Chet Kelly Robinson followed by book signing in the lobby.

Tuesday, July 10, 7:00 p.m. -- Readings by First Book Speaker Dave Halperin and Faculty members Jeff Gundy and Crystal Wilkinson followed by a book signing in the lobby.

Wednesday, July 11, 7:00 p.m. -- "Open mic" night reading featuring workshop participants at The Emporium (coffee and wine shop) in Yellow Springs.

Thursday, July 12, 7:00 p.m. -- Faculty Readings by Carrie Bebris, Jerry Dennis and Les Edgerton followed by book signing in the lobby.

Friday, July 13, 7:00 p.m. -- Reading by selected participants from Afternoon Seminars.

July 2 is the deadline for A La Carte registration, meaning there are only three days left!

Antioch Writers’ Workshop’s A La Carte Options (all held at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs, Ohio), are designed for writers who are testing the writing waters, writers who are looking for a quick dose of inspiration, writers who don't have a full week available to attend the full conference, or writers who want to try a portion of the workshop before committing to attending for the full week in a future year.

A La Carte options include the Saturday Seminar, Morning Only Classes, Evening “Focus on Form” Seminar, and the John Grogan Master Class.

5 Days to Register for the Saturday Seminar A La Carte Option

There are only five days left to register for the Antioch Writers' Workshop A La Carte options.


The Saturday Seminar A La Carte option will take place July 7, 2011, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost is $125 registration plus $25 tuition. This option can be taken alone or in combination with the Full Week Experience, the Morning Only Classes, or the Evening Only Classes. Participants can choose three of the following sessions to attend:

Drawing from your life experience for fiction, essays, creative-non fiction, or memoirs--led by instructor Brady Allen.

Brady Allen teaches writing at Wright State University and is the author of Back Roads and Frontal Lobes (2012), a collection of tales in the genres of horror, crime, the road story, soft sci-fi, dark fantasy, surrealism, existentialism, and even some plain ol' realism. He has published over thirty short stories in magazines, journals, and anthologies in the U.S, England, and Ireland, and has received honorable mentions for a couple of them in the Year's Best Fantasy and Horror volumes from St. Martin's Press, as well as an Individual Artist Fellowship in fiction from the Ohio Arts Council for three others. How to research and incorporate fact in your fiction, essays, creative non-fiction, or memoirs--led by Dayton Daily News journalist Joanne Smith.

Joanne Huist Smith is a native of Dayton. She grew up in the Old North Dayton Neighborhood and attended the St. Adalbert's Catholic Elementary School on Valley Street. Joanne graduated from John H. Patterson Cooperative High School, then earned a bachelor's degree in English at Wright State University. She joined the staff of the Dayton Daily News as a reporter in 1997. During her tenure with the newspaper, Joanne has covered Greene and Warren counties, focusing on education and communities. She currently covers Montgomery County government.

Kate Geiselman's essays have appeared atSalon.com, The Rumpus, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, and elsewhere online. Several of her essays about teaching have aired on NPR stations on The Story with Dick Gordon, an American Public Media production. Her first short story, "She's not There," was the winner of the Dayton Daily News/Antioch Writer's Workshop short story contest, and her first novel is in progress. She teaches writing at Sinclair Community College.

4 Days Left to Register for the John Grogan Master Class A La Carte Option

In addition to kicking off our 27th Annual Summer Workshop with a keynote open to the public on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m., John Grogan, renowned best-selling author of the memoirs Marley & Me and The Longest Trip Home, will lead a creative writing master class on Sunday, July 9, 2012, from 9:00-11:30 a.m.

His master class will provide fiction and nonfiction writers with tools and techniques to bring their writing projects to endearing life for readers and editors.

This master class is INCLUDED in the registration/tuition for those attending the 27th Annual Full Week Summer Workshop, July 7-13, as well as for those selecting to attend the A La Carte Morning Only and Afternoon Only classes.

However, Mr. Grogan's Creative Writing Master Class may also be attended as a stand-alone event. Registration/tuition for this class ONLY is $80.00; box lunch is provided after the class. Please visit our website and look under registration to register for this master class.

Both Mr. Grogan's keynote and his master class will take place at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

7 Days Left to Register for the Morning Only A La Carte Option


There is only one week left to register for 2012 Antioch Writers' Workshop A La Carte options.

A La Carte participants can elect to attend Morning Classes with all Full Week Experience participants, Monday July 9, through Friday July 13, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost is $125 registration plus $250 tuition. This option can be taken alone or in combination with the Saturday Seminar. Mornings start with a complimentary continental breakfast followed by lectures in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and the business of writing. The morning only option is for writers who need their afternoons free but want to brush up on techniques, get inspired, and meet other writers.

Morning only classes include seminars in Fiction, Professional Skills for Writers, Poetry, and Creative Nonfiction as well as John Grogan's Master Class on Sunday, July 8.

Author Hallie Ephron leads an examination of the elements of fiction (e.g., plot, character, and point of view) with discussion of how these elements work in successful writing.

Hallie Ephron is the author of over 10 books, including the Dr. Peter Zak mystery series and the novel Never Tell a Lie (HarperCollins, 2009), whichPublishers Weekly called "stunning" and a "deliciously creepy tale of obsession." The book has been translated into 7 languages and was nominated for multiple awards, including the Mary Higgins Clark Award. It won the David Award for best mystery of 2009. Never Tell a Lie was adapted for film as And Baby Will Fall for the Lifetime Movie Network. Ephron is an award-winning book reviewer for the Boston Globe and has taught elementary school, at the college level, and in corporations. Author Jerry Dennis leads an examination of the elements of nonfiction (e.g., structure, research, and accuracy) with discussion of how these elements work in successful writing.

The Afternoon Only, "Focus on Form" Seminar takes place on Monday July 9, through Friday July 13, 2:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. The cost is $125 registration plus $250 tuition. This option includes John Grogan's Master Class on Sunday, July 8 and can be taken alone or in combination with the Saturday Seminar.

The "Focus on Form" Seminar is hands-on instruction in a small seminar setting led by Chet Kelly Robinson. No manuscript is required! Participants can start new work or develop an existing piece, and will finish the week with a polished piece of writing.

Congratulations Scholarship Winners!

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Dayton Daily News and Antioch Writers’ Workshop scholarships.

Betty Crumrine Scholarship
The first place winner of the  Betty Crumrine scholarship is Toni Lapp of Prairie Village, Kansas. First place winners receive a full waiver of registration and tuition for the Full Week experience.

The second place winner is Carrie Herzner of Cincinnati, Ohio. Second place winners receive a half waiver of registration and tuition.

Judson Jerome Scholarship
The first place winner of the  Judson Jerome scholarship is MJ White of Xenia, Ohio. First place winners receive  a full waiver of registration and tuition for the Full Week experience.

Tied at second place are MK Chavez of Oakland, California; Elizabeth Cantonwine Schmidt of Kettering, Ohio;  and Rebecca Van Laer of Providence, Rhode Island. Second place winners receive a half waiver of registration and tuition.

Sinclair Community College Scholarship Winner
Beavercreek resident, Audrey Craig is the winner of this year’s Sinclair Community College Scholarship Winner.
