A La Carte Option--Afternoon Only "Focus on Form" Seminar

The Afternoon Only, "Focus on Form" Seminar takes place on Monday July 9, through Friday July 13, 2:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. The cost is $125 registration plus $250 tuition. This option includes John Grogan's Master Class on Sunday, July 8 and can be taken alone or in combination with the Saturday Seminar.

The "Focus on Form" Seminar is hands-on instruction in a small seminar setting led by Chet Kelly Robinson. No manuscript is required! Participants can start new work or develop an existing piece, and will finish the week with a polished piece of writing.

A La Carte Option--Morning Only Classes

A La Carte participants can elect to attend Morning Classes with all Full Week Experience participants, Monday July 9, through Friday July 13, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost is $125 registration plus $250 tuition. This option can be taken alone or in combination with the Saturday Seminar. Mornings start with a complimentary continental breakfast followed by lectures in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and the business of writing. The morning only option is for writers who need their afternoons free but want to brush up on techniques, get inspired, and meet other writers.

Morning only classes include seminars in Fiction, Professional Skills for Writers, Poetry, and Creative Nonfiction as well as John Grogan's Master Class on Sunday, July 8.

Fiction
Author Hallie Ephron leads an examination of the elements of fiction (e.g., plot, character, and point of view) with discussion of how these elements work in successful writing.

Hallie Ephron is the author of over 10 books, including the Dr. Peter Zak mystery series and the novel Never Tell a Lie (HarperCollins, 2009), whichPublishers Weekly called "stunning" and a "deliciously creepy tale of obsession." The book has been translated into 7 languages and was nominated for multiple awards, including the Mary Higgins Clark Award. Jeff Gundy is Professor of English at Bluffton University in Ohio, teaching creative writing, poetry and literature. A La Carte Option -- Saturday Seminar

The Saturday Seminar will take place July 7, 2011, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost is $125 registration plus $25 tuition. This option can be taken alone or in combination with the Full Week Experience, the Morning Only Classes, or the Evening Only Classes. Drawing from your life experience for fiction, essays, creative-non fiction, or memoirs--led by instructor Brady Allen. 

Brady Allen

Brady Allen teaches writing at Wright State University and is the author of Back Roads and Frontal Lobes (2012), a collection of tales in the genres of horror, crime, the road story, soft sci-fi, dark fantasy, surrealism, existentialism, and even some plain ol' realism. He has published over thirty short stories in magazines, journals, and anthologies in the U.S, England, and Ireland, and has received honorable mentions for a couple of them in the Year's Best Fantasy and Horror volumes from St. Martin's Press, as well as an Individual Artist Fellowship in fiction from the Ohio Arts Council for three others. Joanne Huist Smith is a native of Dayton. She grew up in the Old North Dayton Neighborhood and attended the St. Adalbert's Catholic Elementary School on Valley Street. Joanne graduated from John H. Patterson Cooperative High School, then earned a bachelor's degree in English at Wright State University. She joined the staff of the Dayton Daily News as a reporter in 1997. During her tenure with the newspaper, Joanne has covered Greene and Warren counties, focusing on education and communities. She currently covers Montgomery County government.

Kate Geiselman

Kate Geiselman's essays have appeared atSalon.com, The Rumpus, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, and elsewhere online. Several of her essays about teaching have aired on NPR stations on The Story with Dick Gordon, an American Public Media production. Her first short story, "She's not There," was the winner of the Dayton Daily News/Antioch Writer's Workshop short story contest, and her first novel is in progress. She teaches writing at Sinclair Community College.

REMINDER: Young Writers Scholarship Deadline

The May 29 deadline for area writers ages 15-18 to apply for the Antioch Writers' Workshop Young Writers program is fast approaching!

For the third year in a row, Antioch Writers' Workshop--a nationally recognized creative writing workshop since 1986--offers an opportunity for young writers (those entering 10th-12th grades in fall 2012, or ages 15-18) to attend the workshop held at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs, July 7-13.

Young writers must submit three pages of creative writing and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, librarian, coach or youth program leader, to the workshop by May 29. Selected writers receive an AWW Young Writers' Scholarship in the amount of $375.00, reducing the total cost of attending to $300.00 for a full week of writing classes, a special writing seminar, and lunches all provided by Dayton Daily Newssponsors.

The Young Writers' program includes attendance to the workshop's morning classes with all participants and the Young Writers' Afternoon Seminar led by Trudy Krisher, award winning author of several Young Adult novels including Spite Fences, Uncommon Faith and Fallout. During the seminar, selected writers will work on individual projects and develop their creative writing craft.

This opportunity is limited to 12 participants and open to students who live in the Ohio counties of Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Clark, Clinton, Fayette, Madison and Warren.

YELLOW SPRINGS--Antioch Writers' Workshop and Books & Co are offering the next Free Writers' Seminar on May 20, 2:00-3:30 p.m. at Books & Co at The Greene in Beavercreek, Ohio. The workshop topic is "Freelancing Nonfiction Articles" presented by Ron Rollins.

Ron Rollins is Associate Editor at Cox Media Group Ohio where he is in charge of  the "Ideas & Voices" pages of The Dayton Daily News, the Springfield News-Sun, theMiddletown Journal and the Hamilton JournalNews. In addition to having worked in journalism for more than 25 years, Rollins has also written several freelance articles forOhio Magazine. Rollins is president of FilmDayton and is on the board of the Antioch Writers Workshop.

June 7 Deadline Fast Approaching!

The deadline to register for the Antioch Writers' Workshop Full Week Experience is June 7.

This year’s Full Week Experience includes Keynote speaker John Grogan’s master class, all morning classes, your choice of afternoon seminar (poetry, Focus on Form, and fiction), and perks not available to A La Carte registrants including individual pitch sessions with visiting agents, lunch opportunities with faculty, an evening participant reading, one-on-one manuscript consultations (for additional small fee), and a reduced cost for the Saturday Seminar.
